Frequently Asked Questions about the Havurah

What is a Havurah?

Havurah is the Hebrew word for a community of friends. It has come to mean a group whose purpose is to meet people's needs spiritually, socially, culturally and religiously.

What are our activities?

NJLGH holds Shabbat Services in members' homes, educational programs at Temple Emanu-El in Edison and other locations, holiday celebrations (Sukkot, Purim, Chanukah, etc.), social events, day trips to places of interest, and special events including an Anniversary Party and weekend retreats.

Who leads the Havurah?

We are organized by a Board of Trustees with supporting committees including program, religious, and publicity. Monthly Board meetings are the 4th Wednesday of every month at Temple Emanu-El in Edison. All members are welcome to attend and contribute.

What if I'm Jewish but my partner is not?

The Havurah welcomes non-Jewish partners and friends as part of our community. Hopefully, we can provide a supportive family atmosphere to introduce a partner or friend to our rich Jewish traditions.

Are there groups like NJLGH in other cities?

There are Gay and Lesbian Jewish groups and congregations in over 30 U.S. cities and in Canada, Europe, Israel and Australia. NJLGH is a member of the World Congress of Gay & Lesbian Jewish Organizations, an umbrella organization of all these groups.

Is NJLGH part of the larger Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered community?

The Havurah is a member organization of the New Jersey Lesbian & Gay Coalition and participates in many events sponsored by other Gay organizations, including New Jersey's Gay Pride celebrations.

Is NJLGH part of the larger Jewish community?

Our members are active in various organizations including Jewish Family & Vocational Service and several area congregations. We are continuing to develop and create strong relationships with rabbis and synagogues in NJ. Representatives of the Havurah participate in speaking engagements at synagogues throughout the state to promote increased awareness and understanding.

When and where does the Havurah meet?

Services and many other celebrations are held in members' homes and in public venues. On the first Thursday of each month we meet for coffee and conversation at Panera's on Route 1 in Edison.
